1938 Superman Comic Sells for Record $6 Million at Heritage Auctions

Jane Sheppard, your trusted local news reporter, here to provide you with the latest happenings in Suwannee County. This week, we’re diving into the world of comic books – a realm that’s not just for kids, but a lucrative market for collectors and investors.

Superman’s Debut Comic Fetches Record-Breaking Price

Recently, a 1938 edition of Action Comics No. 1, the comic that gave us our first look at Superman, shattered records as it sold for a staggering $6 million. The news came from Heritage Auctions, the auction house that facilitated the sale. The anonymous buyer now holds the record for the most expensive comic book ever purchased at an auction.

Why is Action Comics No. 1 So Valuable?

What makes this comic so special, you ask? Well, besides being the birthplace of the Man of Steel, this comic also marked the debut of Lois Lane, Superman’s perennial love interest. Heritage Auctions regards Action Comics No. 1 as “the most important comic ever published”. The Superman we see today, whether in comics or on the big screen, remains astonishingly similar to this 1938 incarnation.

The Rarity of Action Comics No. 1

Another factor that adds to the comic’s value is its scarcity. Certified Guaranty Company, a comic book grading service, estimates that only about 100 copies of Action Comics No. 1 remain in existence today. This figure is downright minuscule when you consider that National Allied Publications, the company that would eventually evolve into DC Comics, initially published 200,000 copies.

Very Fine+ Condition

The $6 million copy originates from the Kansas City Pedigree and has received a “Very Fine+” CGC rating of 8.5. Only two other unrestored issues have received higher grades. Notably, other copies of Action Comics No. 1 have also fetched millions at auctions in recent years. One such copy, with a 6.0 rating, sold for $3.56 million through ComicConnect last year.

Previous Record

Prior to this, the title for the most expensive comic book ever sold was held by Superman No. 1, which sold privately for $5.3 million in 2022, according to CGC.

Heritage Auctions’ Four-Day Event

The sale of Action Comics No. 1 was part of a four-day comic auction event by Heritage Auctions. The event showcased several big-name superheroes and rare comics, culminating in over $28 million in sales.
