Deepak Chopra on Tackling Chronic Inflammation through Lifestyle Changes

Deepak Chopra, a globally recognized figure in alternative medicine and meditation, has recently highlighted what he believes is the world’s most pressing health issue – inflammation. During a meeting last year in New York City, where he announced the expansion of his company into wellness tourism, he emphasized the severity of this issue.

Our body’s immune system triggers an inflammatory response when alerted to foreign entities like pollen or microbes, which is beneficial in protecting the body and aiding its healing process. However, when inflammation becomes persistent and evolves into chronic inflammation, it can lead to severe health issues.

“Stress, inflammation, depression, anxiety, and chronic disease all interlink,” Chopra said. “Inflammation is the common factor in all these diseases.”

Chronic stress can induce a constant state of inflammation in our bodies, escalating the risk for mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, along with heart disease and Alzheimer’s, as per the Cleveland Clinic.

“The reason for that is trauma. Anyone who’s had trauma is likely to be inflamed,” Chopra explained. The surge in mental health problems and chronic stress correlates with the body’s response to trauma, which can originate from generational trauma, isolation, or the stress of the news cycle.

While many things are beyond our control, Chopra urges us to focus on what we can change. “It’s a challenging task,” he admitted, but comprehending the biology of inflammation and how lifestyle habits can manage it is a good place to start.

Here are some tips from Deepak Chopra on reducing chronic inflammation:

Ensure Adequate Sleep

Chopra emphasizes the importance of sleep in reducing stress. Lack of sleep is associated with increased inflammation, as per Harvard Health. Most adults require at least seven to nine hours of sleep per night to lower the risk of chronic health issues like heart disease and stroke. Establishing a wind-down routine, limiting screen time before bed, practicing mindfulness, and maintaining consistent sleep and wake time can help ensure a sufficient amount of sleep.

Manage Stress

As stress is interconnected with inflammation, devising ways to manage it is crucial. This can be through mindfulness, meditation, exercise, or a hobby. Even a short period of deep breathing or an art activity can make a significant difference over time. Practicing gratitude also helps calm the mind and body, thereby increasing happiness levels.

Maintain Emotional Connections

Maintaining positive relationships is linked with lower inflammation levels, unlike isolation and loneliness, which can increase the risk for chronic inflammation and a plethora of health conditions. Finding ways to stay connected to others through volunteering, community groups, or activities can help mitigate these health risks.

Seek Joyful Moments

Research indicates that seeking moments of joy can enhance feelings of calmness and help in stress management. Opportunities for joy are abundant – listening to a favorite song, noticing the changing colors of leaves, or enjoying the aroma of a loved meal can all contribute.

Adopt an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Chopra recommends an anti-inflammatory diet, rich in plant-based whole foods. Consuming foods that fight inflammation can lower your risk for diabetes, heart disease, and depression. He particularly endorses the Mediterranean diet, which includes meals rich in fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and lean meats.
