When it comes to skincare, Ju Rhyu can be considered a savior in the world of acne. As the founder of Hero Cosmetics, she has revolutionized the way people view and treat acne. Her journey, however, wasn’t exactly straightforward.
Ju Rhyu’s career path was not what she calls a straight line. It all started when she landed a job in Seoul, South Korea. There, she was introduced to hydrocolloid patches, a genius solution to acne problems that was popular among her coworkers. This was the spark that would later ignite her venture into the skincare industry.
Acne Solution: The Mighty Patch
The Mighty Patch was Rhyu’s answer to the need for a discreet and effective acne solution. The small, transparent patches allow wearers to cover their blemishes at night or even in public. They are a far cry from regular makeup, which often attracts more attention to the face.
While Rhyu had worked for some of the world’s biggest brands like Kraft Foods, Mondelez, American Express, and Samsung Electronics, it was her experience in Seoul that led her to create her own skincare brand.
Revolutionizing Skincare
Upon returning to the United States, Rhyu was determined to bring her skincare idea to the market. She observed that the hydrocolloid-patch format was already around, but it was only available in the Band-Aid aisle. With that, she decided to bring it to the beauty section.
In 2017, Rhyu and her co-founders decided to bootstrap their business, investing $50,000 of their own money. Their product, the Mighty Patch, sold out on Amazon in just 90 days. By 2022, Hero Cosmetics had made over $100 million in sales and was acquired by Arm & Hammer, Nair, and OxiClean parent company Church & Dwight for $630 million.
A Global Perspective
Rhyu’s travels around the globe have greatly influenced her business. After leaving Seoul in 2014, she moved to Paris for six years, where she continued to run Hero Cosmetics. Today, she resides in Los Angeles and maintains a hands-on approach to her company despite the time difference.
Ju Rhyu’s Daily Routine
For Rhyu, a typical day starts at 6 a.m. with a nutritious breakfast and a morning skincare routine. She then dives straight into work, catching up on emails and preparing for Zoom meetings with colleagues.
By noon, she takes a break for lunch before resuming work or attending to personal needs. In the afternoons, she exercises with a personal trainer or uses her reformer pilates machine. The day ends with dinner, relaxation time with her husband, a nightly skincare routine, and reading before bed.
Through her journey in the skincare industry, Ju Rhyu has shown that it’s possible to turn a personal problem into a successful business. Her dedication to providing an effective and discreet solution to acne has made Hero Cosmetics a major player in the skincare industry.
