Kamala Harris’s Poll Slump Tied to Strategy Shift, Says Pollster Frank Luntz

Recent Polls Indicate a Decline in Favorability for Vice President Kamala Harris

In recent news, Vice President Kamala Harris has experienced a slump in presidential polls, which prominent pollster Frank Luntz attributes to a shift in campaign strategy.

Harris’s Change in Strategy

During an interview with CNN on Wednesday, Luntz pointed out that Harris’s popularity in the polls increased when she focused on reasons why she should be elected president. He stated, “She had the best 60 days of any presidential candidate in modern history. And then the moment that she turned anti-Trump and focused on him and said ‘don’t vote for me, vote against him,’ that’s when everything froze.”

Trump Gains an Edge in Polls

Two significant presidential polls released recently show Donald Trump gaining a slight edge over Harris with less than two weeks to go until Election Day. The Wall Street Journal’s poll revealed a 2% advantage for Trump over Harris, a reverse from August when Harris led by 2%. Another poll from the Financial Times and the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business found that 44% of voters said they would trust Trump with the economy, while 43% said they would trust Harris, marking another reversal from earlier.

Harris’s Campaign Strategy Could Cost Her the Election

Luntz warned that the shift in the Harris campaign could jeopardize her chances at the White House, as voters seek more details about her. “The fact is Donald Trump is defined,” he explained. “He’s not gaining, he’s not losing. He is who he is, and his vote is where it is. She is less well defined, and if she continues just to define this race as ‘vote against Trump,’ she’s going to stay where she is now and she may lose.”

Harris’s Campaign’s Recent Tactics

In the early days of Harris’s campaign, there was a sense of “joy” and optimism. However, in recent weeks, Harris’s campaign has launched more pointed attacks on Trump, including dire warnings on the potential threat he could pose to American democracy.

As former Trump administration officials have labeled Trump a fascist, a claim denied by the Trump campaign, Harris has piled on as well.

Polling Analysis

According to the polling analysis by 538, Trump currently holds a 53-in-100 chance of winning the election, compared to Harris’s 47 out of 100. These figures represent a shift from three weeks ago, when Harris was in the lead with a 58-in-100 chance.

Luntz, however, is refraining from making any election forecast. He told NewsNation on Thursday that uncommitted voters would likely determine the winner. “I think at this moment, in terms of committed, Trump has the advantage,” he said. “In terms of the ceiling of potential vote, Harris has the advantage, which is why I stay away from any projections. I don’t know.”
