North Florida residents and Taylor Swift fans, get ready for a surprise. The pop star’s U.S. fans are currently dealing with sticker shock when looking for tickets to her “Eras Tour.” However, it seems that it’s significantly cheaper to see her perform in Europe, even after taking into account airfare and hotel costs.
CNN has calculated an itinerary that shows traveling to Sweden from New York to see Taylor Swift would cost around $1,300. This total includes:
- $300 for a concert ticket
- $700 for a roundtrip flight
- $300 for one night at a four-star hotel
This might seem like a lot, but it stands in stark contrast to the ticket prices for Swift’s upcoming U.S. shows. According to prices on StubHub, tickets for her performances in Miami, New Orleans, and Indianapolis range from $2,000-$8,500.
Interestingly, Swift’s concerts this month in Paris, where the European leg of the Eras Tour began, drew five times as many Americans as bookings for the Paris Olympics this summer.
Why is there such a drastic price difference?
The disparity in concert pricing is partially due to the strength of the U.S. dollar. The Federal Reserve’s aggressive rate hikes have boosted the dollar against top global currencies, making overseas vacations less expensive for Americans.
Additionally, European countries and the European Union have limits on mark-ups from ticket resellers. As a result, prices for Swift’s Eras Tour in Portugal, Spain, and Germany are around $300-$400.
The “Taylor Swift Bill”
The high prices for Swift tickets in the U.S. have sparked outrage among fans. In response, a “Taylor Swift bill” was signed into law in Minnesota to protect online ticket buyers from hidden fees and dodgy resellers. The Justice Department is also reportedly preparing an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation Entertainment, the parent company of Ticketmaster.
On top of all this, Swift’s surprise release last month of a double album has increased the hype around her tour. This has already propelled Taylor Swift to a net worth of $1.1 billion, earning her a spot on the Forbes list of billionaires for the first time.
So, Suwannee County folks, if you’re a Taylor Swift fan, it might be time to consider a European vacation!
